Deadheading the right way 05/10/2011
0 Comments

Annuals and perennials that repeat bloom will often do so only if the old, dying flowers are removed. If they remain on the plant, they will go to seed and stop producing flowers. Several flowers that bloom only once per season benefit from deadheading, because the plant puts its energy into strengthening itself instead of producing seed. Some exceptions to this rule are plants like Astilbe or ornamental grasses, that bloom only once, but continue to look attractive with their drying seed heads. Most annuals and many perennials will continue to bloom throughout the growing season if deadheaded. Black eyed susan, Butterfly bush, Dianthus and Purple coneflower are good examples of perennials that benefit from deadheading.

Picture
The pictures above show some that were left on a plant. The one the left has already dried, broke open and started to spread the seed. On the right it is in the process of going to seed. These are from petunias.
Picture
This petunia needs to be deadheaded. Below shows the correct way to do it.
Picture
Make sure to pinch behind the bloom...do not just pull the bloom off or it will go to seed.
Picture
This is an example of what happens when they are left to go to seed. The plant starts to get leggy and you just have a bunch of pods and very few blooms. Be sure to pinch the entire bloom off do not just pull the dead blooms off because it will not have any benefits. If you take the time to do this often it does not take that long and actually is my therapeutic time. Do not waste the money you spent on your flowers, deadhead today to enjoy them the whole growing season.

Happy Mother's Day!! 05/06/2011

If you are looking to give your Mom something for Mother's day that reminds her you love her more than one day a year be sure to come visit the nursery this weekend.   Whether you want to giver her the best of the best or just a simple daily reminder of what she means to you we can help with that.  Maybe you want to come purchase several annuals and take them to your Mom's house and spend the afternoon helping her make combo pots. This is something that kids especially love to help with.  Turn them lose and you will be amazed what that pot will look like in a few weeks.  My kids put stuff together that I would never think of and they are always gorgeous and I am pretty sure it is not just because I am biased.  Maybe you want to buy her some perennials that will come back year after year to remind her of how much you care.  Some people like to give a little more so maybe you want to give her some shrubbery like Knock Out Rose bush, Camellia, Rhododendron, Hydrangea or even some Encore Azaleas. If you are blessed enough to be able to really splurge you may want to go to the tree farm and pick her out a big ol' Crepe Myrtle.  For Mother's day we have the B&B Crepe Myrtles, 6'-8' for ONLY $125.00 and Autumn Blaze Maples, 1' - 1 1/2" calib for ONLY $135.00!  As always we have a large assortment of hanging baskets, combo pots and geraniums starting at $8.00

ANNUALS

Select six packs are ONLY $0.99
Select 4" pots are ONLY $0.99
ALL Herbs are 15 % off
We have several varieties:
rosemary upright and prostate
cilantro
dill
basil
lemon/lime basil

sage
and MORE.

Did I forget to mention that all shrubbery and trees are on sale for 10% OFF in honor of Mother's day?  Yes...it is true so come early and pick out the best of the best for Mom, Grandma or that special friend.

Also do not forget the Princess Lillie's pictured on the top row below.  They are one of my favorites as they are a beautiful perennial in a bowl that you can enjoy all summer long as the bloom until the last frost.
Also if you have not entered the drawing for the free Snowball Viburnum Tree on the blog you need to do it as today is the last day!!!

Local nursery vs. Retail garden center 04/18/2011

This is a begonia not on hormones!
This is something I deal with every year.  The big box stores are bringing in their flowers from out of state and/or hot houses that have been treated with plant growth regulators.  Is it really natural to see a one gallon tomato plant in March? Plant growth regulators are a common method that growers use as a control treatment. There are no growth regulators labeled for use on herbs but there is now one labeled for use as a foliar spray on several vegetable transplants grown in greenhouses.  It is industry standard and I don't believe there is any requirements of them to tell you that you plants have been sprayed with these. Growers should take precautions to prevent an overdose, which can have an extended residual effect resulting in poor garden performance.

The problem is they only need it to look good long enough for you to buy it in the big box store you are shopping in.  The next time you stop by our nursery think of one thing. Is it natural to see a 6 pack of dahlias with blooms all over them?  We are talking about a plant that is just a couple inches tall with blooms on it.  The plant growth regulators cause the plant to branch, remain small for the small packing and to force bloom.  It is a known fact if you buy our plants that may not have blooms if you are buying the smaller ones that they will out perform the ones that are in retail stores covered in blooms.

There are a few techniques we use to control plant growth. We are not trying to grow them fast so we can reduce our temps to control the growth. Also we use lights at night and we pinch our plants by hand to increase branching. Our plants have been pinched 3 to 4 times by me, Mike, my mother in law, my mama, my kids or a few of my dear friends.  So when you are buying that 6 pack for $1.80 think about how much time and love has gone into that plant for you.

Picture
We also do not use the strong chemicals to control insects.  Our preferred method is to release lady bugs into the greenhouse which by the way the kids love.  Our kids are growing up in the greenhouse and we are not going to risk the after effects of using those chemicals.  Especially when it says you can not enter the greenhouse for 'X' amount of hours afterward.  How do we really know it is gone? This entry is not to say who is better but to help you be the more informed consumer and to realize when you come into our nursery to buy some small plants and they are not covered in blooms looking picture perfect like at the big box stores that there is a reason for this.

We look forward to seeing you this season and as always remember you comment on any of our blog posts.
